At Southminster Cof E,we take a thematic approach to out topic planning and provision. From Reception to Year 6 themes are chosen taking account of current National Guidance and Frameworks. Planning also takes account of our pupil's interests and strengths.
Each half term topic develops the children’s art, design technology, geography and history skills, knowledge and understanding and because the topics are also linked to our literacy curriculum and a quality text, it allows the children to study each topic for an extended period of time, allowing them to become really involved and excited by the topic.
The aim is to inspire and engage the children through developing parental engagement and interest. At the end of a topic we celebrate and showcase the children’s learning by holding an open afternoon where parents and carers are invited to see their children’s work.
When our teachers plan topic work they consider carefully how pupil’s learning and enjoyment can be enriched. This will include visitors coming to the school to share expertise and experiences or similarly, it may involve our children going out, visiting places of interest.
