Art and Design

At Southminster , we have very high expectations of what children can achieve in art and design. We are committed to stimulating children's imagination and creativity, whilst also developing skills, knowledge and self-esteem. We encourage children to explore both the world within themselves and the one outside their window.

Our ultimate aim is to inspire expressive, independent individuals who journey forwards, making their mark on the world as confidently as they do on paper with a paintbrush, pen or pencil.

Computing

Our computing curriculum has been developed to support children to become proficient users of technology so that they develop the knowledge and skills to thrive in the ever changing technological world.  It is in-line with National Curriculum guidelines

Children are encouraged to use ICT across the curriculum and teachers plan for how ICT can enhance learning in a range of ways.  Children have access to laptops to use in class.

The internet is a powerful tool for learning and children use it to access information for research purposes.  All children are taught how to use the internet safely.

Modern Foreign Language

This year Mandarin has been chosen as our modern foreign language! Mandarin is now being taught in Reception, Key Stage 1 and 2 by a specialist teacher that is fluent in the language. The teachers use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement with Mandarin, to develop a positive approach to languages and to develop an understanding of different cultures.

In Key Stage 1, children are given opportunities to listen to and perform traditional songs and to join in with story-telling. Through this, children will start to hear the different sounds that occur in Mandarin and will start to practice pronouncing some key words and phrases.

PE

At Southminster C of E Primary School, we believe Physical Education and Sport plays an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better. As well as the obvious health benefits in PE,  our children also learn to develop the qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work, and ambition, leading to improved concentration, attitude, and academic achievement.

Science and Technology

Here at Southminster C of E Primary School , we strive to develop an awareness and understanding of the role and importance of Science in everyday life. We appreciate  the constantly changing nature of scientific knowledge and use scientific procedures of investigation to introduce, develop and study the application of science in a broad range of contexts e.g. personal growth and health, the home, the immediate environment and  technology. We are of the view that the development of Scientific knowledge and skills are a crucial, core entitlement for all our pupils, since science stimulates and excites pupils’ curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them.

We encourage children to be autonomous in their learning and try to facilitate debate and reasoning. In addition to this, the Academy gives children the opportunity to plan and conduct practical science activities and experiments. We believe that practical activities breathe life into concepts that might otherwise seem abstract to children.

Where possible the teaching of science is also applied across the curriculum. Links to maths, literacy and other foundation subjects, such as geography and history, further enrich the children’s learning experiences.  Southminster C of E Primary regards science as an integral part of the curriculum and is dedicated to giving the children the tools to be successful scientific thinkers and practitioners.
